Hi Bondylee,
When you reinstalled Windows 8 on your laptop, have you tried playing CD-R / CD? How did you upgrade the OS to Windows 10? Did you follow JenF's suggestions? These steps may be able to help us isolating the issue further:
- Try a different brand of CDs, different CDs with different files on it (movies, mp3s, pictures).
- Power cycle - Shutdown the laptop and remove the battery and other connected devices -> Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
- Run Vaio Update and Windows Update.
