Re: Vaio E series - Cooling Fan noise

In summary: stop windows update!

Hi all,

I am surprised that this discussion is marked as solved. I have nearly tried everything suggested here and they didn't work. Also I didn’t read anyone appraising a solution. It is really frustrating as one mention when you put good money and get this annoying thing that laptops half price doesn’t suffer from.

The only thing I didn't try was to crack my laptop open and disassemble the fan and clean it. I was going to do it (still itching to do it, I like to take things apart), but luckily (for the laptop) I discovered the culprit and killed it... and people I am in heaven, with a quite laptop that I can turn on at night beside my lovely wife without kicking me out.

  • By pressing ctrl+shift+Esc you will open the task manager, make sure you are in the "more detail mode".
  • Sort the apps listed by cpu speed (by clicking on the CPU column). For better readings; from View menu make sure the Group By is not checked.
  • One of the software will be in the top of the list, in my case it was a service host, I expanded the service and on the top was the service Windows Update.
  • With right click and stop service the CPU usage percentage went down and the fan speed became lower, but the service restarted and the fan speed pick up again.
  • So I stopped the Update (Google it yourself). Mine was set on "Install and download automatically"; I set it on Never.. maybe in few weeks I will change to the other less demanding option like Check only.

In summary, check your task manager, and try to switch off (or uninstall) the service (or software) that cause the issue.

By the way, I also send my laptop 3 times to the service center and always get the laptop with the same problem... useless.
