Speed/stamina switch not working

Wow, first letme say how truly TERRIBLE the Sony community support board is; looks awful on ALL browsers, non-intuitive, just an absolutely inexcusable mess for a company as big as Sony.

My Vaio VPCSA3AFX laptop suddenly will not switch from STAMINA to SPEED mode.  After looking around, the issue appears to be that my Display Adapter driver is Intel HD Graphics 3000.  I have attempted to uninstall this multiple times, allowing the laptop to re-install and it keeps installing this same driver.  I attempted to download and run the latest Sony driver executable for this laptop, A2DVID-00269144-1040.exe, but even though it claims to install successfully I still only have the HD Graphics 3000 driver.  How in the HECK do I get my laptop to switch from Stamina to Speed/update my display adapter driver?  It's so frustrating that Sony actively locks down their laptops so I can't just go to the AMD website and download/use their latest drivers, but failing that it's worse that the driver .exe they force you to use apparently doesn't work either.

Advice?

I'm still running Windows 7 64-bit.
