Re: The Sony Vaio Flip and its noisy fan

Hey everyone,

I just got a Vaio Flip 14 used for a great price and I knew of the overheating issue before I bought it.

This lapto was no exception and suffered from the over-zealous fans. To help the heating issues you can do two things:

  1. Reapply thermal paste between the heat dissipator and cpu
  2. Replace your HDD with an SSD

Today, I oppened it up and looked at the thermal paste that Sony used. It wasn't just dried up but it was so dry and old that it was basically rocks. I cleaned it all up with isopropyl alcohol and purchased the best thermal paste as recommended by many, many people on Amazon. I applied the paste and the results were drastic:

- CPU heat down from 60 C to an average of 45 C

Now, the issue prior to this was that the heat jumped up to 60 C and sort of stayed there regardless of how fast that fan was going. Through my research I noticed that the Intel i5 processor wasn't reported to have been the culprit of overheating so it must have been one of three things: 1. The fan , 2. The dissipator , 3. The thermal paste.

Indeed, it cracked it open and it was the thermal paste. Now the computer can indeed spike to 60 C during periods of heavy use but the thermal paste is so efficient at regulating the heat that it quickly falls back down to an average of 45 C. I used the program HWiNFO64 to measure the cpu temperatures. The fan is properly quite at these temperatures so this seems to be the most efficient solution to the problem.

If you want to go further, you can swap out the HDD for an SSD, however, there is much debate regarding whether this ACTUALLY lowers temperatures in your pc or not. Some say that SSDs use less power therefore less heat. Others say the SSD is so quick that the CPU doesn't wait for commands like it would with an HDD and therefore you are loading it with more work, therefore more heat. Whichever way you go..... thermal paste maintenance is the best remedy to this issue.

Good luck
