Re: Can I fry my laptop if I didn't remove battery before removing screen?

Hi, this is my first post on here, I hope it is posted in the right section..please help!

I did the exact same thing that nunicagirl did to her sony vaio and now I have the same problem. My screen is not displaying anything. My laptop is a sony vaio vpcse1l1e/s.

To give you some background, my screen had a vertical line going through it. I found that if I squeezed the bottom of the screen bezel and bend it slightly the line would disappear. After a while the line was always there.

A few weeks ago I watched a video on youtube of someone with a similar problem who managed to fix their screen by repositioning the lcd cable. The person demonstrated on a laptop that was powered on and showed how moving the cable slightly made the line on the screen disappear. I decided to try the same thing on my laptop. Big mistake!!

This is what I did:

I unplugged the charger from the laptop. Powered down the laptop but left the battery in as I intended to turn it back on after removing the lcd screen from the cover to get to the back and play with the lcd cable. After removing the plastic bezel, I unscrewed the frame that was holding the screen in place, while doing this..the bottom of the lcd screen kept hitting the power button and powering on the laptop, I would imediately hold the power button down to power it off, this happened a few times. After removing the screen from the case, while the laptop was powered on, I disconnected the lcd cable from the back of the screen and then reconnected it. This is when I noticed that the screen was blank! I checked to see if the cable was properly connected and it was, but the screen was still not coming on.

I put the laptop back together and turned it on, but the screen was still blank. I read somewhere a possible fix was to remove the battery and hold the power button down for upto 2 mins, did this but still nothing, even though I could hear the laptop booting up and hard disk showing activity. I managed to connect my laptop to my TV via hdmi to test the laptop and it worked fine that way (for a while at least, but now it won't even output to hdmi, only vga which is useless to me. If I can't get the laptop's own screen to work and I can't connect it to an external monitor, it's just a giant paper weight).

I was about to order a new lcd screen thinking I had blown mine but on the lcd screen replacement website it mentioned vertical lines were associated with a bad lcd cable. So I decided against buying another screen and potentially wasting my money and instead buy an lcd cable. Did a quick search to find one for my model and found one for about 18 dollars on aliexpress. That arrived a few days ago, I replaced my old lcd cable with the new one but still have a blank screen Smiley Sad

I'm really fed up now, want to scrap my laptop but I still have an emotional attachment to it. I am planning on buying a new laptop, but just want to know if there is anything else I can try to get the screen working again on this, so I could use it as a spare if I ever need to.

Sorry for the long post, I just wanted to give as much info as possible to help find a solution. I'm curious to know whether the original poster managed to fix her screen and if yes, what fixed it. She did say she replaced the screen which didn't fix the problem, so I'm guessing its either a simple fix such as removing the cmos battery to reset the bios (which I read could  be a possible fix, but I can't locate it on my laptop to try), or something much more complicated like needing a motherboard replacement. I just don't think I could have damaged it that badly, but then what do I know!

I hope someone experienced can give me some advice on what I should do. Is it worth getting it repaired professionally considering how old the laptop is (early 2011), or should I save my money and spend it towards my next laptop?

Thanks in advance.
