I suggest you to try with the copper shims first, I wouldn't risk just use thermal paste even though it looks like it will be possible. Remember, thermal pastes are supose to to fill invisible micro grooves on the metal to help transfer the heat , if you don't use the shims and the thermal paste melt too much it will appear a gap between the core and the heatsink(90% of chance it will happen). During the instalation If the shims are too thick for that, look for 0.5mm thermalpads even if the gap is only 0.3mm because they are flexible enough to adapt to the gap size. I recommend use only thermal paste if the gap is smaller than 0.2mm, To mesure that use multiples sheet of a4 paper they mesure aprox 0.1mm. Thanks for the information, and good luck.
