Hi there,
I have an old Vaio FW11ZU I occasionally use, approx a couple times a month, which isn't turning on anymore all of a sudden. My AC adapter works (it has a power LED and its able to charge my other laptop), but my battery is pretty much dead, so i generally use the laptop via the AC cord. It's worked very well all this time so i'm hoping it isnt a costly motherboard issue, although it sounds along the lines of it.... Here's what happens:
First i insert the AC adapter, and then turn on the power.
The green light on the laptop button comes on, the hard drive LED flashes once, and the blu-ray drive starts working. However, the screen is blank, and the fan is not working. Num lock/caps lock keys do not light up.
Another strange thing i've encountered is that, when i try turning it off from this state, holding the power button down won't do so, so i need to disconnect the AC adapter to turn off the computer. In addition, when i press the power button - the battery LED on the computer (one next to the hard drive LED) lights up for some reason. This LED doesn't light up any other time now (not even when inserting the AC adapter) - only when i press the power button. Does this indicate some sort of power malfunction?
So the only things which show some sign of life are: the power button, the hard drive and battery LEDs, and the Blu-ray drive.
I have tried the following:
- Power button press for 60 seconds to turn off laptop fully - nothing.
- reseating RAM - nothing
- starting laptop with no battery and just AC adapter - nothing
- opening laptop and reseating the CMOS battery - nothing
I'm hoping as the laptop doesnt appear to be completely dead, it might be fixable. Does anybody have any ideas? Thanks for your help!
